Activities in Japan

  • Ambassador Betty Grace Akech Okullo, Ambassador of the Embassy of Uganda in Tokyo showing gratitude to Ambassador Fujita, Ambassador of the Embassy of Japan in Uganda for sparing time to travel to Japan to support children from Ashinaga Foundation Uganda for a cultural performance in Sendai and Tokyo.
  • Hon. Sam K. Kutesa, Minister Of Foreign Affairs Of The Republic Of Uganda And President Designate Of The 69th Session Of The United Nations General Assembly Visits Japan.
    The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uganda and President designate of the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly visited Japan from the 9th to 12th of July 2014 to further strengthen mutual cooperation between the two countries and discuss multilateral issues at hand in the UN with the Government of Japan.Hon. Kutesa held several meetings with key authorities in the Government of Japan where he expressed gratitude to the international community for voting him, and added his intention to focus on a transformative agenda for humanity especially regarding issues related to women empowerment, poverty eradication and climate change in the pursue of the post 2015 agenda.

  • The Embassy has continued to deepen relationship between Uganda and the Japanese leadership by taking part in all activities organized by their Imperial Majesties Emperor and Empress Akihito, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (Gaimusho), the Ministry of Education, the Ministry for the Economy, Trade and Industry and has good working relationship with JICA and other Japanese government based organizations such as JATA, JETRO and, JOGMEC.

  • At the invitation by the President of the House of Councilors of the National Diet of Japan, in reciprocity  to the visit made to Ugandan Parliament, the Speaker of Parliament of Uganda led a Parliamentary delegation to Japan from 23rd -27th October 2013 that held meetings with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as well as the President of the House of Councilors of the Diet, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Committee of the Japan-AU Parliamentary Friendship League, JICA, JETRO and the African Diplomatic Corps.

  • At the Invitation of the Government of Japan, Hon. Frank Tumwebaze, Minister for the Presidency and Minister in Charge of KCCA visited Japan from 4th November-9th November 2013 and held meetings with Senior Japanese Government Officials, as well as various Japanese companies interested in doing business with Uganda. i.e. Yanmar Company Ltd, Saraya Company Ltd, and Yamada Seiyu  Incorporation.

  • The President of JICA visited Uganda from the 27th to 29th December 2013 for the official opening of the New Nile Bridge Construction. He also made site visits to Nakawa Vocational Training Institute , Namulonge Regional Rice Training and Research Centre and Entebbe Hospital.

  • The Embassy received a Delegation led by the Honorable Minister of Health, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, accompanied by the Minister of State (Internal affairs), Amb. James Baba, The Executive Director of the Joint Clinical Research Centre, and Eng. Dr. John Tumwesigye from the Ministry of Health who Visited Japan from  24th to 30th September 2013. They held successful talks with the Tokushukai Medical group geared towards implementation of the Uganda Tokushukai Project ( setting up an ultra modern high technology Hospital in Uganda). The Tokushukai medical Corporation was led by , Dr. Tokuda Turao, Chairman of Tokuda Corporation, Mr. Arthur Stern, International Executive Representative, Madame Iyoko Nakamura, Deputy Manager Office of Dr. Tokuda, and Dr. Milanga Mwanatambwe, Representative for Africa Tokushukai Medical Corporation.

  • TICAD V Follow up:
    • The Embassy continues to follow up on the TICAD V commitments of Japan to Africa bilaterally and under the auspices of the African Diplomatic Corps ADC. The Ambassador met MOFA and JICA officials and was briefed of the progress of the implementation of TICAD V commitments to Uganda.

    1. Under infrastructure Development: The construction of the New Nile Bridge, The Project for the development of the Northern Corridor Logistics Master plan (Technical cooperation for development planning) and Greater Kampala Road network and Flyovers Project are being undertaken.

    2. Other projects include:

    2.1 Nakawa Vocational Training up grade of Courses

    2.2 Rehabilitation of Hospitals in Western Uganda - This project is meant to realise the commitment to support and improve healthcare systems to achieve the Universal Health Coverage. To this effect, on 28 November, H.E. Junzo Fujita, Japanese Ambassador to Uganda, and Hon. Maria Kiwanuka, Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, signed the Exchange of Notes of a grant project totaling JPY 1.817 billion (approximately USD 18 million) , entitled “the Project for the Rehabilitation of Hospitals and Supply of Medical Equipment in the Western Region in Uganda” in Kampala, Uganda. The project aims to construct facilities and procure medical equipment in three Regional Referral Hospitals (RRHs), namely those in Hoima District, Kabarole District and Kabale District.

    2.3 NERICA Rice Project, SSME etc.

    2.4 Uganda will also benefit from ABE initiatives this year.
