Business - Ugandan Exports [Flowers]
CUT FOWERS:
In Uganda,commercial floriculture is a decade old industry that has made a major contribution to the national
economy in terms of foreign exchange earnings,
employment opportunities and rural development.
The floricultural crops produced include twenty seven varieties of roses, some chrysanthemum, bulbs, tubers,
live plant rootings and cuttings, cutflowers, fresh foliage and grasses.
Uganda floriculture exports are dominated by the roses industry which accounts for 77%, about 150 million stems,
of total exports. The variety of roses currently grown are T-hybrids (long stem, big flower head),
sweet hearts (shot stem, small flower head) and floribundas (intermediate).
Within each of these types there is a wide range available in a wide range of colours.
